Caregiver Network Support Group
Caring for a loved one, such as an elderly parent, spouse or friend, can be as stressful as it can be fulfilling. Caregivers are compassionate individuals who work hard to improve the quality of life for those they care for. Generations Caregiver Network is working to help area caregivers balance their plates of caregiving tasks along with life's other responsibilities by participating in the National Family Caregiver Support Program.
Enacted as part of the Older Americans Act Amendments, the program calls for all states, working in partnership with Area Agencies on Aging and local community-service providers, to offer five basic services:
- Information on available services
- Assistance to gain access to services
- Individual counseling, organized support groups and training
- Respite care (temporary relief for unpaid caregiver)
- Supplemental services on a limited basis
Who is eligible?
Persons in the greatest social and economic need who are caring for individuals age 60 and over or older individuals providing care and support to persons with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities.
Need help?
Please join Caregiver Network Support Groups. Caregiver Network sponsors two caregiver support groups. The Knox County support group meets on an informal schedule and caregivers can contact Sheri Phillips, Director of Healthy Aging Programs, for meeting information by calling 800-742-9002. The Pike County support group meets the third Thursday of each month, at 7 p.m., in the First Baptist Church Annex House, Seventh and Poplar streets, Petersburg. The City of Huntingburg hosts its own caregiver support group that meets the third Monday of each month, at 6:30 p.m., in St. Joseph's Hospital, Suite 210, 511 E. Fourth St. These confidential, informative support groups can help caregivers gain new ideas and understanding of their roles in caring for loved ones. If you are a caregiver, please join one of the groups to share thoughts, feelings and experiences with other caregivers in similar situations.
