There is no doubt that over the next 30 years, the senior population in our six-county area will grow by 60%. Even though nearly 90% of seniors would prefer to stay in their homes and remain active in their communities as they age, only 46% of America’s communities have begun planning for the increase in the senior population.

Generations is addressing this issue by asking if our area is prepared for the immense changes that this demographic shift will require. Our elders are assets to our communities, and we must plan wisely in order to ensure our communities are places where older adults can enjoy healthy, independent, productive and satisfying lives.

We began the EngAGE initiative to ensure our communities are good places to grow up and good places to grow old. Generations will work with community leaders to identify gaps, develop goals and work on action plans.

Generations will lead the EngAGE Communities project. The overall goal of EngAGE is to prepare our communities for the upcoming demographic shift by creating communities that meet the basic needs and nurture the aspirations of older adults. The EngAGE initiative is modeled after the Advantage Initiative and will focus on four key areas:

EngAGE is embracing proactive and cutting edge approaches to aging, and is guided by four core beliefs:

Generations will continue to take a proactive approach in serving the needs of older adults by anticipating, envisioning, and actively working toward elder-friendly communities through a community-based planning and action process. An elder-friendly community is a community that allows older adults to age in place through embracing a variety of services, policies, and programs that allow older adults to remain comfortable in their homes and active in their communities.
